DA9053 Features
- Martin Welford
Overview
Opal includes a Dialog Semiconductor DA9053 which provides power supply and touch/analog features.
The DA9053 is available in standard and automotive variants.
For detailed information on the capabilities of the DA9053, consult the Dialog Semiconductor datasheet.
The standard Opal module part includes the auto-start/automotive temperature DA9053 variant. Opal Development Kits may have the non-auto-start version.
Power supplies
This section details the power input and output requirements of the Opal module, as managed by the DA9053.
Input
Opal has 3 main input power supplies:
- DC input
- USB power input (VBUS)
- Li-Ion Battery (single cell)
The battery features is not currently supported by any of the Operating Systems available for Opal. Contact us if this features is important to your application.
The specifications for these inputs are shown in the table below.
Pad | Input Voltage | Name | Max current draw | Notes |
---|---|---|---|---|
B-159 -168 | 5V | DCIN | - | Main power in from DC supply. |
A-1 to 4, |
| VBUS | - | Alternate main power if using a battery and USB charging. The DA9053 can manage the charging process and maintain current draw on this rail to the limits described in the USB specification. |
A6-10, |
| VBAT | - | Battery connection. Use single cell Li-Ion. |
B-4 |
| VBBAT | 6mA | Backup battery connection. Re-chargeable Li-Ion coin-cell or Super-Cap. |
Output
Opal provides several power rails for use on your base-board design. The following table details the rails available, and the maximum power that can be drawn.
Pad | Voltage | Name | Max current available | Notes |
---|---|---|---|---|
B-19 –B-21 | 3.3V | DCDC_3V3 | 800mA | 3.3V supply output from the module. This is supplied by an additional buck-boost regulator (not part of the DA9053). |
B-23 | n/a | VDDCORE | 10mA | Use this to pull up the power button with a 10k resistor if used. |
B-8 | 3.3V | VLDO3_3V3 | 150mA | Additional 3.3V supply from the DA9053 |
B-3 | 2.775V | VLDO4_2V775 | 100mA | LCD Logic supply from the DA9053 |
B-11 | 1.8V | VLDO8_1V8 | 150mA | 1.8V supply from the DA9053 |
B-22 | 3.3V | FEC_3V3 | 800mA (combined with DCDC_3V3) | Ethernet supply. This is derived from DCDC_3V3 and filtered on the module. |
Touch and Analog Interface
The DA9053 includes an analog block for touch screen, battery measurement and general purpose analog inputs.
Pad | Signal Name | Description |
---|---|---|
B-29 | TS_YN | Touch screen inputs for 4-wire resistive device. |
B-30 | TS_YP |
|
B-26 | TS_XN |
|
B-28 | TS_XP |
|
B-34 | TSREF | Touch screen reference voltage. Not required for touch-screen operation. |
B-27 | TBAT | For battery measurement. Connect to NTC resistor. |
B-145 | ADCIN4 | General purpose 2.5V, 10-bit ADC inputs. |
B-147 | ADCIN5 |
|
B-148 | ADCIN6 |

Power Button and Boot
The DA9053 controls the supply rails during boot for the i.MX53.
This is initiated by pulling the nONKEY signal low. There are two configurations for this signal possible with the DA9053:
- Power on when the key is pressed
- Power on when power is applied (auto power-on)
This option is set in the DA9053 part at the (Dialog) factory and cannot be altered.
The standard Opal part has the auto power-on bit enabled, however you may have a development kit which required you to press the power button.
